# What Is a Handicap?

Handicapping is a historic thing in sports betting. When the difference in strength between two teams is obvious, you need to balance it somehow and make the odds look equal for the event outcomes.\
This is resolved using **handicaps**, which can be:

* ✅ **Positive** (assigned to the underdog)
* ❌ **Negative** (assigned to the favourite)

### ⚽ Example: Handicap in Practice

Let’s take this example match:\
**Spain vs Costa Rica**\
Final score: **2–1**

* **H1(−1.5)** → Spain wins with handicap −1.5 → Final score: 0.5–1 → ❌ You lose
* **X(0:1)** → Draw with 1-goal advantage to Costa Rica → Final score: 2–2 → ✅ You win
* **2(0:1)** → Costa Rica wins with 1-goal advantage → Final score: 2–2 → ✅ You win

👉 The format of handicap is different in these three bets:

* `AH1(-1.5)` is **Asian handicap**
* `2(0:1)` is **European handicap**

### 🧭 Handicap Types

#### 📘 Asian Handicap

Asian handicap removes the possibility of a draw:

* If the result is a draw (after handicap), the stake is returned.

**Types of Asian handicap:**

* Full lines: `±1`, `±2`, `±3`
* Half lines: `±0.5`, `±1.5`, etc.
* Quarter lines: `±0.25`, `±0.75`

🧮 **Quarter bets split into two:**

* AH(+0.25) = half on AH(0) + half on AH(+0.5)
* AH(+0.75) = half on AH(+0.5) + half on AH(+1)

**Example**

* You bet $100 on AH1(+2.25) @1.8
* Stake is split into:
  * $50 on AH1(+2)
  * $50 on AH1(+2.5)
* If the team loses by 2 goals → both bets win\
  → $50 × 1.8 + $50 × 1.8 = $180
* If loses by 3 → both bets lose

#### 📗 European Handicap

European handicap is more classic and includes **three outcomes**:

* Win
* Draw
* Loss

Only **whole numbers** are used: `+1`, `−1`, `+2`, etc.

**Example:**\
**Belgium vs Canada**, handicap `0:1`, final result `1–1` →

* Belgium starts −1 → Final adjusted score: `1–2` → Canada wins

Results:

* `1(0:1)` → Belgium wins → ❌ (Belgium didn’t win by 2)
* `X(0:1)` → Draw → ❌
* `2(0:1)` → Canada wins → ✅

### 🧠 Summary

* 🟡 **Asian Handicap** = removes draw, may refund
* 🔵 **European Handicap** = includes draw as outcome
